FATSTOCK CHRISTMAS SHOW – MONDAY 1st DECEMBER - RED MARKET
York Auction Centre had 459 head of stock forward including 186 Cattle, 110 Sheep and 163 Pigs at their weekly sale of Prime stock.
A smaller entry of cattle forward this year, with 45 cattle on show. Quality was certainly not lacking, leaving the judge; Mr Henry Laverack of A Laverack & Son LTD with a difficult job choosing his favourite.
Sunday’s event focused on families and young farmers with Santa Claus and the children’s play area very popular. For the budding young farmers there was great opportunity to meet up and learn more from the Ebor Young Farmers group and the YAS Future Farmers. It was great to see all our livestock farmer clients along with so many other customers and guests. Everyone enjoyed the social occasion and engagement with people both inside and outside of the farming industry.
The main feature of the event was the annual Christmas Show of cattle and sheep which certainly did not disappoint, with some tremendous quality stock on show. After the livestock show the Fairburn singers sang carols with Santa Claus round the Christmas tree followed by a charity auction and concluded with the annual carol service, which saw a packed marquee with around 150 in the congregation enjoying carols accompanied by the Shepherd Group quartet and the Fairburn singers.
Henry Laverack of A Laverack & Sons, Holme Upon Spalding Moor awarded the supreme champion in the clean to a super British Blue steer shown by Wagstaff Bros of Westfield Farm Sutton on Forest it weighed 648kg and sold for £6.75 per kg grossing £4370.76 being purchased by the Judge Henry Laverack. The reserve champion in the clean was awarded to a wonderful Limousin heifer bred and shown by J R Johnson & Son Flat Top Farm Terrington, it weighed 674kg and was sold for a whopping £7.60 per kg grossing at a massive £5119.03 purchased by Knavesmire Butchers from Knavesmire.
In the bulls he awarded the supreme champion to a wonderful home bred Limousin X bull from F Bristow & Son Rose Farm Murton, it weighed 836kg and was sold for £4.70 per kg grossing £3925.02 and purchased by the Pearson family – R Pearson of Oakenshaw. The reserve champion was awarded to a Limousin X shown by S Beachell & Son Beswick Hall Beswick, weighing 602kg selling for £4.60 per kg, £2766.19 also to Ralph Pearson of Oakenshaw.
The judge commented on the quality of all cattle on show and stated that all the vendors should be congratulated. In both clean and bulls there was not much to choose between the Supreme Champion and the Reserve.
