Perokia Herd dispersed at York
A full ring assembled at York Auction Centre on Wednesday the 9th May to see the 300 strong Perokia herd of Holsteins go under the hammer. Messrs H & V.A Thompson moved the herd from Driffield and saw cattle dispersed to all parts of Yorkshire, across the Penines into Lancashire & Cheshire also to North & South Wales and Shropshire.
Top price on the day was 2050 guineas firstly for Perokia Artes Serena 5, a fresh second calver that had given 9500kg as a heifer and then for a newly calved heifer by Toc-Farm Goldfish, one of 40 head purchased by Shaun Sowray of Harrogate. Despite the loose housing that deterred some buyers the best milking animals made 1600-1900 guineas but anything with a blemish was harder to sell.
The young cattle were keenly sought with the spring/summer calving heifers averaging over £1350 with 6 making 1600 guineas or more. Those due from September onwards averaged over £1000 selling up to 1250 gns. Maiden heifers topped at 1000gns and averaged £860 and the heifer calves at foot peaked at 580gns.
At £1050 per animal sold this was a highly satisfactory result but showed the discerning nature of the buyers who discounted anything with a fault.
