CATTLE
The 2016 York Christmas Fatstock Show was the happiest and best attended in recent years with the Lord Mayor of York, David Taylor, together with the Lady Mayoress and the Chairman of Ryedale District Council, Bob Gardiner, all in attendance to hand out the prizes.

There was a full ring of farmers, buyers and visitors to hear the Lord Mayor make his appeal for his Christmas Charity which this year took the form of a raffle for 3 enormous hampers from a trio of local butchers David Wilson, M & K Butchers both from York, and Fletchers of Malton

The Charity raffle raised a staggering and record £1,000 to be divided up amongst various agricultural charities.

The Supreme Championship of this year’s show went to Wagstaff Brothers of Sutton on Forest who produced the most outstanding and stylish Limousin steer weighing 542kgs making a record 430p/kg and adding up to £2,327.

The Reserve Champion was the lightweight heifer shown by another family partnership W & L Thompson from Middleton, Pickering which made 320p/kg.

A feature of this year’s event was the involvement of several generations of families on both the producer and buyer/butcher sides of our Fatstock Market.

The cattle from the Wagstaff Farm were all shown by Russell, supervised by father Barry and Uncle Bill; Matthew Kneafsey, the younger generation of the Kneafsey Family who own M & K Quality Butchers, Bishopthorpe Road bought the Supreme Champion and 2 of the other major trophy winners.

The Thompson Family were represented by 3 generations, grandfather Les, father John, and young Brad showing the cattle.

Even the judge Peter Hogg from Fletchers Butchers in Norton, Malton was being watched closely by his successor daughter Sarah.

The trade and response from the butchers was rewarding and everyone has enjoyed the event.

A side show is our now regular Pork Pie Competition which this year featured 6 local butchers and the winner for the 2nd year running was David Wilson of Huntington.
