FATSTOCK MARKET – MONDAY 3rd DECEMBER
INCLUDING CHRISTMAS FATSTOCK SHOW FOR CATTLE
York Auction Centre had 894 head of stock forward including 208 Cattle, 515 Sheep and 171 Pigs at their weekly sale of Prime stock.
The 2018 Christmas Fatstock Show was sponsored this year by Lloyds Bank, Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors, Bishopton Vets, Farmstar and Holmefield Farm Services Ltd. The Lord Mayor of York, Mr Keith Orrell with wife Judith Orrel, Sheriff of York, Mrs Verna Campbell with husband Professor Colin Campbell and Ryedale Chairman, Mr Michael Cleary were all in attendance to present the prizes.
The Judge this year was Andrew Butterfield from Barnsley who had a very difficult job choosing between 55 show cattle. The supreme champion and Limousin champion for this year’s show went to the Wagstaff Bros of Sutton on the Forest, York, who produced a wonderful, strong, meaty heifer, weighing 558kg, making 380p/kg, and adding up to £2,117.61. This was purchased by David Penny for M&K Quality Butchers (the Kneafsey family) of Bishopthorpe Road, York.
The reserve champion and British Blue champion was a heavyweight steer, shown by W & L Thompson of Middleton, Pickering, weighing 648kg, selling for 272p/kg, bought by Penny & Sons of Rawdon, Leeds.
The Lord Mayor made the annual appeal for support for his charities, which again took the form of donations and a raffle. Four very large hampers were kindly donated by David Wilson, M&K Butchers, Fletchers of Malton, and Tony Wasteney.
In addition there was the 8th annual Pork Pie Competition alongside the 2nd annual sausage competition. There were 6 entries for the Pork Pie Competition, being won by B W & D J Glaves, and 8 Entries for the Sausage Competition, which was won by Fletchers of Malton.
