Saturday 23rd April 2022

On behalf of the RBST and the York Centre Support Group

It was a welcome sight to see the Rare, Minority and Native Breed sale getting back to something like normal this year apart from the absence of poultry due to the current disease restrictions. This also meant we were unable to include hatching eggs in this year’s sale

This year’s spring sale included 44 cattle, 22 pigs, 19 goats 166 sheep and 6 Alpacas including 1 Cria at foot

In the cattle section the top price was 2050gns for a red and white Belted Galloway bull from I & S Beeforth. Other notable prices included 1250gns for an Aberdeen Angus bull, 1050gns and 1000gns for 2 Longhorn females

Top prices in the pig section included 3 Gloucester Old Spot X Pietrain gilts140gns and 110 gns for a British Saddle back gilt. Four pens of British Saddleback weaners averaged 45gns each

Goats averaged 104gns with a top price of 200gns for a Saanen Nanny with a female kid at foot. A Boer female which sold for 190gns

In the rare breed section of sheep the top price was 290gns for a Kerry Hill ewe with twin female lambs at foot followed by a Ryeland ewe with twin female lambs at foot which sold for 240gns

Other notable prices included

Kerry Hill Gimmer shearling 235gns

Coloured Ryeland Gimmer shearling 195gns

Herdwick Ram 138gns

Suffolk Ewe with twin lambs at foot 360gns

Top price in the non-native breed section was 2500gns for a registered Valais Blacknose ewe closely followed by a Valais Blacknose gimmer shearling at 2000gns and 1500gns for a ewe lamb all from the same vendor

Of the 6 Alpaca’s entered 3 were sold with a top price of 1200gns for a female with a cria at foot.

The 36th Rare Breed Autumn Show and sale will be held on Saturday 1st October 2022 when hopefully the disease restrictions on the auction sale of live poultry will be lifted
